I made it. I am officially in Ecuador. I'm sitting in my room sipping a Coke (it's sad when it's safer to drink Coke than the water!) and eating a granola bar. Thanks for recommending that we bring those, Linden! I had dinner on the plane around 5:00, but find myself hungry again. I think it's because in merely 2.5 hours, I will have been up for 24 hours.
For those of you who know the real Erin - the "I need at least 8 hours of sleep each night and take naps as often as humanly possible" - you are likely impressed. As am I!
I (semi) willingly admit that traveling for 16 hours makes for a long day. I was so hot, annoyed and gross by the time I got to the hotel, as soon as the bag boy left I stripped down and jumped in the shower. Good thing it was a quick shower (I hadn't even unpacked) because I may have gotten carried away and starting singing in the shower. A strict no-no in South America - can't take the chance of getting H20 in your mouth! Becky B used to say in college "no one likes a sober Erin" - I think we could change that to "no one likes Erin when she drinks foreign water and is on the toilet 24/7." I don't dare find out what that would be like.
Anyway, I'm babbling. I'm here - I have a day of nothing in front of me tomorrow. My Linden "buddy" is already here and left me a note at the front desk. We are going to have breakfast in the hotel tomorrow & go exploring. My first impression of this city is it's a bit like Mexico - colorful buildings and a bit dirty. But it was dark out.
Oh, and I swear my cab driver drove like 80 on the main roads. I was certain I was going to end up on the Channel 12 news tomorrow as "UM-Flint Graduate Advisor killed in freak cab accident in Ecuador." Did I mention I couldn't figure out how to put the seatbelt on?
Speaking of TV, I'm watching Letterman. How American is that?!
I promise I will have more exciting things to report tomorrow.
